What it is
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to harmonize it with the rest of the face, addressing the bridge, tip, and nostril width.
Septorhinoplasty combines aesthetic goals with functional ones. It corrects a deviated nasal septum to improve breathing and reduce snoring and recurrent sinusitis.
Two different objectives, a single surgery when needed.
How it is performed
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 3 hours. Two techniques are available:
- Closed technique: incisions are made only inside the nose, leaving no visible scars.
- Open technique: a small incision is made at the columella, which is useful for complex reshaping of the tip. The scar is minimal and well-camouflaged.
At the end of the procedure, a splint or cast is applied to protect and stabilize the nose. The length of the clinic stay is evaluated on a case-by-case basis depending on the complexity of the surgery.

WHAT TO AVOID:
- First 2 weeks: do not blow your nose—only dab gently; avoid direct sunlight; do not rest glasses on your nose, use supports that rest on your cheeks
- First 6 weeks: no sports, gym, or intense physical exertion
- Up to 12 months: SPF 50 sunscreen—the skin remains more sensitive to the sun during healing
POST-PROCEDURE PRECAUTIONS:
- Sleep with your head elevated on 2 pillows to reduce swelling, especially during the first two weeks
- Apply cold compresses to the eyes and cheeks for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours for the first 2 days—never on the cast or splint
- Nasal rinses with saline solution 3-4 times a day to maintain cleanliness and comfort
- Breathe only through your mouth during the first 3 days while nasal packing is present
- The splint is removed after 5-7 days during an outpatient visit with the surgeon
- You can wash your face with lukewarm water from day 5-7, being gentle around the nasal area
- Normal reactions that resolve naturally: pronounced swelling (days 1-3), bruising around the eyes (1-2 weeks), a feeling of nasal congestion even after packing is removed (gradually decreases), slight soreness (a few weeks), and dry skin inside the nose (normal during healing)

This procedure must be performed exclusively by a qualified and certified plastic and maxillofacial surgeon in an authorized and accredited facility with appropriate equipment for general anesthesia. It requires a thorough preliminary medical evaluation, rhinomanometry (measurement of nasal airflow) if breathing problems are present, blood and instrumental tests, and a specialist consultation to plan the surgery. It is contraindicated in cases of active smoking (must be stopped at least 4 weeks prior), cardiovascular diseases, coagulation disorders, active upper respiratory tract infections, or unrealistic aesthetic expectations. Results vary based on nasal anatomy, skin quality, cartilage elasticity, age, and individual healing response. A natural and proportionate result requires a very precise technique and a deep knowledge of nasal anatomy. We follow up with you at 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year with post-operative check-ups to monitor healing, breathing, and the aesthetic outcome. Any micro-touch-ups are evaluated exclusively 12 months after the initial surgery, once the final result has completely stabilized.
