What It Is

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and repairs diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscles (muscle separation that frequently occurs after pregnancy), to restore a flatter, more toned abdomen and a defined waistline. It is the ideal solution if you have loose abdominal skin after pregnancy or significant weight loss, or if your abdominal muscles are separated and weakened, or if you desire a flatter and more defined abdomen. Perfect for those who want a permanent and transformative result that significantly improves aesthetics as well as posture and abdominal support.

Abdominoplasty is one of the most effective procedures for abdominal rejuvenation, especially after pregnancy.

How It Is Performed

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in a facility with a 1-2 night hospital stay. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision hidden along the bikini line, from one iliac crest to the other. Excess skin between the navel and pubis is removed. Then, the rectus abdominis muscles are repositioned and sutured to restore support and tone, diastasis is repaired if present, and the navel is repositioned in the correct position. If localized abdominal fat is present, liposuction may be combined. The result is a flat, toned, and natural abdomen.

The technique is personalized: the surgeon modulates the procedure based on the amount of loose skin and the presence of diastasis.

Post-procedure

WHAT TO AVOID:

  • For the first 3-4 weeks: avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting, and intense physical activity
  • For the first 3-4 days: maintain a slightly flexed position (not fully upright) to reduce tension on the scar
  • For the first 2 weeks: avoid direct heat (sauna, hot baths, direct sunlight)
  • For the first 10-14 days: avoid touching or massaging the abdominal area
  • Always avoid: smoking during healing as it severely compromises scarring

POST-PROCEDURE PRECAUTIONS:

  • A compression garment must be worn 24 hours a day for 4-6 weeks to manage swelling and support abdominal tissues
  • Maintain a slightly flexed position for the first 3-4 days (walk slowly and do not stand fully upright for long periods)
  • Surgical drains are removed 3-5 days after the procedure
  • Sutures are removed after 10-14 days during a follow-up visit
  • Apply cold compresses to the abdomen for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours during the first 2 days to reduce swelling
  • Take antibiotics and pain relievers as prescribed by the surgeon
  • Drink plenty of water to support healing
  • You can resume light activities after 2-3 weeks
  • Sports and intense physical activity can resume after 6-8 weeks
  • Avoid swimming and pool water for at least 2-3 weeks
  • Protect the scar from the sun for at least 6-12 months to avoid discoloration
  • Normal reactions that disappear naturally: pronounced swelling (2-3 weeks), abdominal soreness and tension (2-3 weeks), bruising (1-2 weeks), numbness of the abdominal area (temporary, resolves in a few weeks)

Disclaimer

This procedure must be performed exclusively by a qualified and certified plastic surgeon in an authorized and accredited facility with appropriate general anesthesia equipment. It is not a substitute for diet and exercise for weight maintenance. It requires a complete preliminary medical evaluation, blood tests, and instrumental examinations. It is contraindicated in cases of active smoking (must be stopped at least 4 weeks prior), obesity, cardiovascular diseases, or coagulation disorders. Results vary based on skin elasticity, the extent of laxity and diastasis, age, and individual healing response. It is essential to maintain a stable weight after the procedure to preserve results. Any future pregnancies could partially compromise the results. It is fundamental to strictly follow post-operative instructions, especially regarding maintaining a flexed position and using the compression garment, to achieve the best results and avoid complications.
