What It Is

Brachioplasty is an aesthetic surgery procedure in Como that removes excess skin and fat from the inner arm to correct the typical laxity of “bat wing arms”. It is the ideal solution if you have excess sagging arm skin, which often occurs after significant weight loss or with advancing age. Perfect for those who desire toned, defined arms proportionate to the rest of the body, with a permanent and natural result.

Brachioplasty is one of the most transformative procedures for arm rejuvenation, especially after significant weight loss.

How It Is Performed

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in a facility with overnight stay. The surgeon removes excess skin along the inner arm, from the armpit to the elbow, through an incision concealed on the inner side (which remains well hidden even with raised arms). If excess fat is present, gentle liposuction is combined. The remaining skin is tightened and sutured, creating a more slender and toned profile. The result is a defined, proportionate, and natural arm.

The scar is concealed: it is made along the inner arm, generally well hidden by clothing and natural folds.

Post-procedure

WHAT TO AVOID:

  • For the first 3-4 weeks: avoid raising arms above the head and physical exertion
  • For the first 10-14 days: avoid sleeping on your arms or in positions that create pressure on the limbs
  • For the first 2 weeks: avoid direct heat (sauna, hot baths, direct sunlight)
  • For the first 10-14 days: avoid touching, massaging or applying pressure to the scar
  • Always avoid: smoking during healing as it severely compromises scarring

POST-PROCEDURE PRECAUTIONS:

  • A compression garment must be worn 24 hours a day for 3-4 weeks to support the tissues and reduce swelling
  • Sutures are removed after 10-14 days during a follow-up visit
  • Apply cold compresses to the arms for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours in the first 2 days to reduce swelling and bruising
  • Take antibiotics and pain relievers as prescribed by the surgeon
  • Keep the area clean and dry during healing
  • Sleep with arms rested and supported for the first 3-4 days
  • Avoid lifting and exertion involving the arms for at least 3-4 weeks
  • Do not swim or immerse in water for at least 2-3 weeks
  • You can resume light activities after 2-3 weeks
  • Sports and intense physical activity can resume after 6-8 weeks
  • Protect the scar from sun exposure with SPF 50+ for at least 6-12 months to prevent discoloration
  • Use scar creams or silicone gel starting 2-3 weeks after the procedure to improve scar appearance
  • Normal reactions that disappear naturally: pronounced swelling (10-14 days), soreness (2-3 weeks), bruising (1-2 weeks), tension and stiffness in arm movement (a few weeks), sensation of hardening around the scar (temporary, resolves in a few weeks)

Disclaimer

This procedure must be performed exclusively by a qualified and certified plastic surgeon in an authorized and accredited facility with appropriate provisions for general anesthesia. It leaves a permanent scar along the inner arm, although generally well concealed. It requires a complete preliminary medical evaluation, blood tests and instrumental examinations. It is contraindicated in cases of active smoking (must be discontinued at least 4 weeks prior), cardiovascular pathologies, coagulation disorders, active infections. Results vary based on skin elasticity, extent of laxity, age and individual healing response. It is essential to maintain stable weight after the procedure to preserve results. The scar improves significantly over 12-18 months and continues to improve over time, although it remains permanently visible. It is essential to scrupulously follow post-operative instructions, especially regarding rest and avoiding exertion on the arms, to achieve the best results and optimal scarring.
