What it is and how it is performed

What It Is

Liposuction is an aesthetic surgery procedure that suctions localized fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise, allowing you to reshape the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, knees, and other areas of the body. It is the ideal solution if you have localized fat accumulations that do not diminish despite diet and physical exercise, or if you wish to improve body definition and proportions. Perfect for those who want a permanent result on the removed fat cells, with a more toned and proportionate body.

Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures for body contouring, with visible and gratifying results.

How It Is Performed

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia, depending on the size of the area to be treated. The surgeon makes small incisions (3-5 mm) in strategic areas, invisible after healing. Through these incisions, a thin cannula connected to a suction device is introduced, which gently breaks down the adipose tissue and removes it. Modern techniques use ultrasound (ultrasonic liposuction) or laser (lipolaser) to facilitate suction and reduce procedure time. The result is a slimmer, more toned, and proportionate body.

The technique is precise and controlled: the surgeon removes fat uniformly, respecting the body’s natural proportions.

WHAT TO AVOID:

  • For the first 3-4 weeks: avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting, and intense physical activity
  • For the first 2 weeks: avoid direct heat (sauna, hot baths, direct sunlight)
  • For the first 10–14 days: avoid touching or massaging the treated areas
  • Always avoid: smoking during healing as it compromises scarring

POST-PROCEDURE PRECAUTIONS:

  • A compression garment must be worn 24 hours a day for 3–4 weeks to manage swelling and support the tissues
  • Lymphatic drainage in the following days significantly helps to reduce swelling
  • Apply cold compresses to the treated areas for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours for the first 2 days to reduce swelling and bruising
  • Take antibiotics and pain relievers as prescribed by the surgeon
  • Keep the areas clean and dry during healing
  • Drink plenty of water to support lymphatic drainage
  • You can resume light activities after 1-2 weeks
  • Sports and intense physical activity can resume after 4-6 weeks
  • Avoid swimming and pool water for at least 2-3 weeks
  • Protect the treated areas from the sun for at least 3 months to avoid discoloration
  • Normal reactions that disappear naturally: pronounced swelling (2 weeks), bruising (2–3 weeks), soreness (1–2 weeks), possible temporary lumpiness (resolves with lymphatic drainage)

Disclaimer

This procedure must be performed exclusively by a qualified and certified plastic surgeon in an authorized and accredited facility. It is not a treatment for generalized obesity or cellulite, but solely for localized fat deposits. It is not a substitute for diet and exercise. It requires a complete preliminary medical evaluation, blood tests, and instrumental examinations. It is contraindicated in cases of active smoking (must be stopped at least 4 weeks prior), cardiovascular diseases, coagulation disorders, or active infections in the area. Results vary based on skin elasticity, the amount of fat removed, age, and individual healing response. It is essential to maintain a stable weight after the procedure to preserve results. Manual lymphatic drainage in the following days/weeks significantly improves results and reduces swelling and bruising.
